For almost three decades, a Choctaw fall had one shape. The week after Labor Day, Harper Road slowed down, tents went up at Choctaw Creek Park, and the Turek family fed something close to fifty thousand people over nine days of schnitzel, polka, and beer. If you lived here, that was your September. Everything else scheduled around it.
That anchor is gone. Old Germany Restaurant closed for good after a brief attempt to reopen in 2018, and in 2025 Mike and Sammie Turek moved the event itself to OKC Fair Park under the name OK!toberfest. What replaced it in Choctaw is not one large festival. It is a smaller, more distributed rhythm that a resident can actually use, and it rewards showing up on the right night rather than blocking out a full week.
What Actually Left, and What Did Not
Two separate things went. Old Germany Restaurant at 15920 SE 29th Street closed after 42 years, then reversed course, then closed again when reopening plans fell through in 2019. Oktoberfest kept going in Choctaw for a while without its founding restaurant, and then in 2025 the Turek partnership with OKC Fair Park pulled the festival itself into the city. The 2025 edition of OK!toberfest ran October 9 through 11 with Dorfrocker, The Happy Hour Oktoberfest Band, Das Ist Lustig, and Auf Geht's on two stages, plus STV Almrausch performing Schuhplattlers and nightly Beer Stein Holding Contests at 8:30 p.m.
What did not leave: the pavilion, the farmers market, the park itself, and the small operators who used to feed off Oktoberfest traffic. That inventory is now the whole game.
The Choctaw fall calendar used to be one event with a town wrapped around it. Now it is a town with several small events wrapped around a park.
September 11 Is the New Anchor
The Choctaw Pepper Festival and Friday Nights in the Park will run on September 11, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Choctaw Creek Park, free to attend, with live music, retail vendors, food trucks, and a dedicated farmers market area. Two hours. One evening. That is the entire footprint, and it is worth understanding why the pepper-eating contest is the piece to plan around.
The contest is not a novelty. It is a locally sourced escalation built out of what growers around Choctaw actually produce. Past years have moved contestants through:
- Jalapeño, roughly 2,000 to 8,000 on the Scoville scale
- Red serrano, 10,000 to 25,000
- Pequin, 30,000 to 60,000
- Thai chili, 50,000 to 100,000
- Sugar rush peach, 100,000 to 150,000
- Ghost pepper, up to about 1 million
- 7 pot yellow, above 1 million
- "The Beast," grown at Pepper Ridge Farm here in Choctaw, reportedly over 3 million
Pepper Ridge Farm is a veteran-owned micro farm with customers nationwide, and Huffman Family Farm has also supplied contest peppers. If you are new to the neighborhood, watching a friend eat something grown two miles from your house is a faster orientation than any welcome brochure.
Fridays Are the Weekly Version of the Same Idea
The Pepper Festival is not a one-off. It is the loudest Friday in a run that goes from May through October at Choctaw Creek Park. Friday Nights in the Park is a seasonal farmers market with live music and a food-truck bay, and by early September the growers still have peppers, tomatoes, late squash, and a handful of prepared-food vendors making regional hot sauces from market produce.
The practical read for anyone who lives here: the market is the closest thing Choctaw has to a downtown on a Friday evening. Ten to twelve Fridays a year, on the same patch of grass, with turnover in vendors and music. If you were the sort of household that used to make Oktoberfest your one Choctaw night out per year, the market is where that habit re-lands, at a smaller scale and without the parking pain.

The trade is real. You lose the once-a-year spectacle. You gain a calendar you do not have to plan around.
Where Dinner Fits Without Old Germany
The hole left by a 42-year German restaurant does not get filled by one place. It gets filled by the fact that Choctaw already had a working roster of local operators, and Oktoberfest week had been drowning them out. Harley's Café, Johnny's Italian Restaurant, and My BBQ & Grill sit near the top of most Choctaw-only lists, with CJ's Kitchen, 85 Asian Fusion, Boomarang Diner, Tasty Burger, and Los Tapatios rounding out the rotation. For breakfast, A One Donuts and Daylight Donuts are the two names the City of Choctaw's own visitor guide leads with.
If you want the German experience once a year, the honest answer is now a 25-minute drive to OKC Fair Park in mid-October rather than a 5-minute drive to Harper Road in early September.
The Park Has More Than the Pavilion
Choctaw Creek Park at 2001 N Harper Road runs on more than event weekends. Walking and equestrian trails, a fishing pond, disc golf, outdoor fitness stations, horseshoe pits, and rental pavilions with electricity all sit on the same footprint that used to disappear under Oktoberfest tents for a week each fall. In a year without that footprint tied up, the disc golf course and the trails are usable through October in a way they were not before.
Two pieces of the town's park system that residents tend to underuse in the fall:
Ten Acre Lake. Close-to-home fishing, home to the annual Kids Fishing Derby, kayak-friendly on calm mornings. In October the pressure on the lake drops and the light is better than it is all summer.
Rock Island Caboose Park. A historic caboose serves as the centerpiece, and the surrounding picnic area is a short, low-key stop for a walk with visiting family who ask what there is to do in Choctaw.
Choctaw Creek Golf Course. Par 71, 113 acres of rolling hills and tree-lined fairways, designed by Tom Billings in 1989, with Choctaw Creek in play on several holes. October is the best month on the course. It was also the month the course was hardest to enjoy during Oktoberfest week because of the surrounding traffic. That constraint is no longer there.
Halloween Is the Second Anchor
The city's Halloween at Choctaw Creek Park runs with trick-or-treat booths, food trucks, live music, and inflatable attractions. In an Oktoberfest year, Halloween planning at the park had to work around teardown and turf recovery from the tents. This year the park is intact all October, which is a small operational detail with a real effect on how the event actually feels on the ground.
A Simple Way to Use the Season
Three dates and one habit is enough.
- Friday, September 11, 6 to 8 p.m. Pepper Festival at Choctaw Creek Park. Bring cash for vendors. Watch the contest if you have never seen one.
- Any two other Fridays before the end of October. Friday Nights in the Park is the closest thing to a standing town gathering. Two visits gives you the vendor turnover and lets you find a favorite.
- Halloween at Choctaw Creek Park. Confirm the date on the City of Choctaw calendar closer to the week, then go.
- The habit. Use the park in the daytime the way you were going to use Oktoberfest at night. Trails, the pond, the caboose, the golf course. It is the same 113 acres that used to be a nine-day festival footprint, and it is quiet again.
